Telstra and Expway Partner to Demonstrate Intelligent Switching of LTE Broadcast and Unicast On-Demand

With The Expway Middleware

Mobile World Congress, Barcelona, Spain – February 27th 2017 – Expway, leading supplier of LTE Broadcast middleware technology, revealed today that following successful integration of Expway Middleware with session continuity feature into commercial handsets, Telstra, Australia’s leading telecommunications and technology company, is positioned to trial a new generation of On-Demand LTE Broadcast, (aka MooD), allowing intelligence between unicast and broadcast.

LTE Broadcast On-Demand allows mobile network operators to provide mass media content to mobile users with unparalleled video quality and experience sustained through peak traffic times.

With LTE Broadcast On-Demand, the LTE service detects an increase in demand for popular content, like headline news or sports championships, and automatically switches from streaming in standard unicast to optimized LTE Broadcast. It also reverts back to unicast with a reduction in user demand. This capability allows the optimum use and efficiency of network capacity by the operator for delivery of media to many users.

In 2017, Telstra will undertake a production pilot of MooD enabled delivery of streaming content. The Expway Middleware will offer service continuity between transmissions from unicast to broadcast as mobile users switch from one service to the other, or move to different geographical areas.

Mike Wright, Telstra’s Group Managing Director of Networks said “We are committed to delivering our customers the best mobile network in Australia, this includes the highest quality and most reliable media experiences. We are utilizing LTE-B as a means of delivering a more efficient network and we are expecting a performance and efficiency gain through the introduction of LTE Broadcast On-Demand. We will field test the new technology extensively to understand and optimize its performance for our customers and to create a more efficient way to deploy LTE-B into our mobile network. ”

“Telstra is one of the most advanced mobile network operators in the world,” said Claude Seyrat Co-Founder and CMO at Expway. “We are proud to help Telstra deliver the highest quality video to their mobile users, with a reduced capacity impost and a more efficient utilization of its network resources. We envisage other operators will follow Telstra’s lead in using LTE Broadcast On-Demand, as the competition intensifies on spectrum availability, quality of service and cost of delivery”.

LTE Broadcast will become an integral part of any LTE service as LTE evolves to 5G and new generations of eNodeBs, MMEs and EPCs natively support this technology. Since LTE Broadcast uses existing infrastructure, no additional spectrum is required to increase network capacity when needed and smoothly absorb traffic peaks. Mobile network operators use the technology to reduce backhauling and RAN infrastructure costs.
